why do those turtles cross the road?

Early morning driving Route 60, road full of turtles, mostly box turtles, not all still walking.  Bagged these two & released in our yard for safer wandering. 

This, presumably, mother snapper was charging across our grass when I stepped from car. Of course, she rounded when I approached.  Would that be to smile for the camera?

We had expected heavy turtle traffic:  buckets of rain last night, warm & partly sunny this am.

point of view

Monday morning, overcast. Numerous turtles, snapping & painted, boldly heading south across US Route 60. I think of New Kent as oriented directionally east-west, following Route 60 & Interstate 64. But clearly, there is another point of view: with wetlands above & the Chick below, there are those thinking north-south. It all depends on where you're going.

Picked up two small snapping turtles at two different points. One had been injured. Released them in swamp, where there may be dangers, but none barrelling along at 60mph. Arriving nervously withdrawn, within 10 minutes of resting on the damp ground they ambled off. No sign since.
